It has been a couple of years since the Bittboy Pocket Go was first released. It all began with an average-seeming plastic handheld that looked more like a Kinder Egg than an emulator that can actually emulate ROMs. But, after years and years of research, development and evolution, the brand has released the new and improved version; Pocket Go. It’s much smaller than the original. But it’s made from high-quality materials following expert craftsmanship.
Bittboy has come a long way to where they are. It’s quite surprising to see how well they’ve done considering the fact that they’ve been doling out versions after versions of their coveted devices. There’s no denying that the Bittboy Pocket Go is giving the competition a run for their money. They’re working overtime to make sure they stay on top.
Build Quality
One of the major things to be noted in this Pocket Go Review is how well built it is. Bittboy has somehow managed to use new and advanced materials that aren’t even in the purview of most of their competitors. It has a strong plastic shell with a distinctly rich texture that’s quite different from the original Bittboy. The 2.4-inch IPS screen on the front features an impressive resolution of 320×240.
This screen also offers multiple viewing angles and a vibrant and bright aesthetic which makes the Pocket Go virtually addictive. Then, there’s a basic d-pad with customizable ABXY buttons and the usual start/select buttons. You can change the ABXY buttons to reflect the new colored set. All you have to do is disconnect the emulator from the back, drop the buttons in through the front and Bob’s your uncle! Just make sure to use caution or else you might break one of the tiny parts that are included.
This Pocket Go Review wouldn’t be complete without mentioning how responsive the buttons are. We’re very pleased with how well placed they are. However, the plastic material can get a bit slippery after some time. This is especially if you use it with sweaty hands for prolonged periods of time. Otherwise, the speaker is loud and clear, with a powerful backend that can easily handle and even eliminate noise distractions.
Playability
As a fan, we’d be remiss not to mention the playability of this emulator in our Pocket Go Review. If you don’t know what an emulator is, it’s basically software that has the ability to play ROMs. ROM stands for “Read Only Memory.” It’s a unique type of file that allows you to play and enjoy old-school retro games. You can use an emulator to play a Pokemon ROM, for example, but you’d need a legal copy of the game in order to download a ROM.
The Bittboy Pocket Go is compatible with PlayStation 1, NAME, Neo Geo, PCE, SMS, SMD, SNES, Gameboy Advance, Gameboy Color, Gameboy and NES games. So long as you have a legal ROM download for each game, the Bittboy Pocket Go will help you play it.
The Pocket Go offers a near-perfect emulation of most ROMs, especially the ever-popular Gameboy variety. You might experience a bit of screen tearing here and there. But luckily there were no frame drops or audio jitters during our Pocket Go Review.
However, we did encounter some problems with PlayStation 1 ROMs. That’s because most of the games were in 3D format. This format requires a significant amount of processing power. We tried incorporating a frame skip straight to the PS emulator but that didn’t really solve anything.
Conclusion
To conclude our Pocket Go Review, there’s reason to believe that this is one of the best handheld emulators out there. It’s small and compact enough for you to use it on the go and yet it’s built from sturdy materials so it can handle a fair amount of use and abuse without falling apart on you. Otherwise, it offers perfect ROM emulation, with highly responsive buttons, a great looking screen, and clear audio.
The screen is so bright that you can easily play in the sun with it. Judging by the build quality of this Bittboy Pocket Go, the sky’s the limit when it comes to handheld consoles in this category.
