With more and more streaming services coming out recently, there seem to be streaming wars going on in the world of online content. When Apple TV Plus was launched, they spent a huge amount of money on content. This includes The Morning Show that stars Steve Carell, Reese Witherspoon, and Jennifer Anniston. However, it was eventually outperformed by a comedy show based upon Emily Dickinson.
There’s also another streaming service that spent almost $17 million per episode on a show that mostly consists of Jason Momoa spending his time in the wild. Then there’s another service that was launched around November. This was just before everyone got preoccupied with the impeachment proceedings and those Democratic debates.
Not Capable of Attracting Large Audiences
It seems that the Apple TV+ news cycle is remarkably short. Although the Emily Dickinson comedy show did manage to generate a fandom, none of these initial series that the streaming service has launched seems to be capable of attracting larger audiences.
Jason Momoa’s See, The Morning Show, as well as the Space Race drama For All Mankind, have all generated more excitement to the viewers. As a matter of fact, all three shows are still adding more and more episodes weekly. On the other hand, Disney Plus achieved 10 million subscribers on its first day. Since then, the Baby Yoda has become one of the most loved characters.

What the media dubbed as streaming wars might actually lead to episodes of streaming massacres. In this case, the fate of a streaming service is determined within only a few weeks of its launch. So, we can probably say RIP to Apple TV+. These wars will most likely lead to these streaming platforms’ early demise.
Perhaps, things will be different if some of the major players involved in these wars were startups and not the richest and most powerful corporations. In fact, Apple TV+ comes from the first publicly traded company in the US to be worth more than a trillion. Therefore, it can certainly afford to take gambles. This is as long as the leadership of Apple is confident on what they are doing.
Streaming Superpowers Are Invulnerable
Some other streaming superpowers seem to be invulnerable in the midst of these streaming wars. For instance, AT&T and NBC Universal are both expected to launch their own streaming services in 2020.
Meanwhile, Disney, whose initial number of subscribers may include users who have canceled their subscription after the end of the free trial, is looking ahead for 2024. The company wants to achieve around 60 to 90 million subscribers by that time.
On the other hand, Apple TV+ renewed all of its initial scripted shows for adults. This was even before the streaming service was launched. On November 28, Apple TV debuted Servant, a psychological thriller show that’s not really that good. However, the signature plot twist of M. Night Shyamalan seems to have attracted the viewers’ attention and that of the social media as well.
While it might seem like these streaming wars will not end, as more and more streaming services are being launched every year, viewers will have their own choice as to what streaming platform they will subscribe to.
Others might root for Apple TV+, while some would go for Disney TV Plus. In order for a streaming service not to end up a casualty, it should be able to provide unique offerings that will encourage viewers to choose them over the others.
